I have Jornada 720. Right now I'm using Familiar Linux, installed from image taken from rtfm's site. I have been able to use Internet, install (from familiar's repositories) GCC and development libraries, successfully build emacs, OCaml, nethack and some other applications. Hovewer, there are some problems with that setup (not supported anymore, sometimes the system just hangs, not able to compile some programs b/c of some weird binary incompatibility problems - gcc complains about software vs. hardware FP) that make me consider JLime. So I have a few questions:

- Does jlime have 2D acceleration? On familiar screen updates are very slow.
- Will I be able to have a working GCC environment and compile programs natively? I tried to install the GCC package under jlime, but ipkg segfaulted.
- Will there ever be sound support? True suspend support (is it possible after all?) Do you plan a userland update soon ? Or is the team concentrated only on 680 development?

(Moving to jlime is a hard decision also because I'd have to buy a new wifi card. I have Agere (hermes 2 chipset) card, which is supported under 2.4 kernel and works well, but not under 2.6. I know that rtfm even compiled the wlags49_h2_cs module for the 2.6 j720 kernel for someone, but it crashes ("kernel null pointer dereference") everytime I insert my card. I know next to nothing about Linux kernel and don't have skills necessary to fix this; although I know the module in question has been successfully compiled under x86 - there is a long thread on ubuntu forums about it.)

- "Does jlime have 2D acceleration? On familiar screen updates are very slow. "
I didn't make the videodriver, its generic in the sense that many platforms use it.
I cannot answer on the acceleration, however I believe video is quicker on 2.6 than 2.4.

"- Will I be able to have a working GCC environment and compile programs natively? I tried to install the GCC package under jlime, but ipkg segfaulted."
Ipkg is abit tricky (we are waiting for a new version called opkg) but if it segfaults then 99% of times it depend on it ran out of memory (= set swap!).

"- Will there ever be sound support? "
Yes, it will come sooner or later. The problem is that I cannot give any estimate since
that depends on future "breakage".

"True suspend support (is it possible after all?)"
The debugging cmonex did of the wince userland suggests that true suspend is indeed possible.

"Do you plan a userland update soon?"
Wicked (or RTFM) is the maintainer for Mongo userland (and any subprojects). Whenever he thinks a release is ready (or if he's eager to start a new version) he can discuss it with me.

"Or is the team concentrated only on 680 development?"
Alot of focus have been on the 6xx side of the kernel, simply because it was in the worst shape of all (no sound / pcmcia / bad keyboard /...). Its on par with 7xx now, so they should get equal time.

All userlands have their own maintainer which develope seperatly, I focus more on the kernel side of all archs. Often the maintainers wait with a release until there's enough kernel progress to warrant an release.

Thats basically what i'm waiting for is a kernel newer than 2.6.19-rc6 that actually works as good if not better. Currently none of the new 7xx kernels work ( touchscreen for example doesnt work at all in 2.6.2x ). The touchscreen in 2.6.19-rc6 may be a little too oversensative currently, but it works.

That being said, i did receive a donation of a hard drive which i havent had time to install yet ( currently working 2 jobs which takes away free time ), but i will get that setup and pump out new userlands and packages in due time. With the exception of the kernel issues ( touchscreen, suspend, sound etc ) i feel the current icewm userland is pretty much in good standing for a beta. Its stable i know that much. My j728 currently has a 49 day uptime. 8)

So while my updates may currently be in a lull, i'm basically waiting for a good kernel to be released to push me back into getting things done.

Cheers.
